How To: Be Nice to Yourself (For A Change)

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

Whether we realise it or not, a lot of us are our own worst enemy specifically how we see ourselves and how we think about ourselves (self talk). Our self image needs to be improved if we want a shot at levelling up and moving towards the things we want in life.

The road to self acceptance takes effort, resilience and the right knowledge and guidance along the way. But as they say; 'Investing time in yourself is the best investment you could ever make.'

Keep in your lane

When you focus on others too much you get caught up in their world and lose sight of yourself and end up feeling lost. This is so easy to do with social media and with people sharing so much of their lives online.

You probably already know whether you spend too much time on social media, if so; make a deliberate plan to spend less time online and more time on yourself.

Discipline is always needed for happiness and success, and this time it’s needed in your routine or schedule.

If you don’t have a basic daily routine you’re actually losing time, and time is money.

That sounds backwards when you think of a schedule taking up all your time and being a boring, uncomfortable idea. But scheduling your day more efficiently will result in more free time later on if that’s what you want.

Taking on more responsibility will also help you feel fulfilled and support your own self acceptance.

Treat Yourself Like Someone You’re responsible for Looking After

This is a mindset shift that kicks out the self hate and raises the lower standards you may have set for yourself. It's all about making better decisions for yourself. Make decisions as if you were making decisions for someone you’re responsible for looking after.

You need to become your own best friend to be able to support yourself wherever you go in life.

Self Talk

Our self-talk is any inner dialogue you have with yourself. For a lot of people their self talk is causing pain and misery. Negative self-talk is any thought that diminishes your ability to make positive changes in your life or your confidence in yourself to do so that may be limiting your ability to believe in yourself and your own abilities.

Before we go any further it must be said that some negative self talk is normal and needed for certain decisions we make in life, I'm not supporting any toxic positivity nonsense. But, you'll know whether or not your negative self talk is causing more harm than good.

With the exception of people with severe mental illnesses or disorders, these thought patterns can be developed to be more positive and supportive. Even severe mental illnesses can be managed with professional guidance (sageclinic.org).

The information we have available to us today is vast and powerful if used correctly. We have access to thousands of psychology studies, books and frameworks which we can learn from and use to understand ourselves better and develop ourselves and our minds more healthily.

Some tried and true techniques used by and recommended by thousands of professionals worldwide are;

There are so many factors which contribute to the good or bad thoughts we think, such as the environments we're a part of every day, our decisions and our overall health. Review these areas of your life first to understand if and how they can be improved to support the more positive thinking you deserve.

Professional Guidance

There are many tools and tips which can help but seeking professional help should always be considered first. It’s almost never a bad idea to seek professional support when you want to understand yourself better or collect more tools to get through a challenging phase. Therapy is especially important if you’re recovering from an abusive relationship, or find yourself in repeated bad relationships.

Therapy can help you recognise and understand the patterns behind the trauma you’ve experienced. You have the opportunity to gain clarity and closure to ultimately heal from the trauma and embrace who you are and what you deserve.

Final Sign Off of Self Acceptance

1. Embrace what makes you unique.

2. Let go of the things you can't change.

3. Identify your strengths.

4. Set goals.

5. Celebrate the effort you put into achieving your accomplishments.
